But even CDMA's best friends don't seem to be helping much. At Comdex I spoke separately to reps from LG and Sanyo, each supposedly the person in their booth who would know the answers to my questions. At least they were the guys others pointed to as the answerman.

I asked about 1x phones being rolled out in the US and was advised that they make what carriers want, and carriers don't want 1x now. Their networks won't support 1x until then. I advised that 1x is supposed to increase voice efficiency by a factor of 2 and that voice efficiency would be achieved based on the percentage of use by 1x devices. I advised that 1x phones are supposed to work transparently on non-1x networks and then asked why it would make sense to delay use of 1x chips in phones. They just looked at me like I was from Mars and reiterated "We build what carriers want, and carriers don't want 1x until late next year."

This makes no sense to me. Can anyone explain this behavior on the part of carriers?
