I must object to your description of the ongoing election process. Punchard ballots have problems that have been known for many years. Their rate of error is much higher than other methods used in this election. These machines are used much more predominantly in urban areas, which happen to favor Gore. The rural and suburban areas, where Bush is strong, more commonly use the more modern optical scanning method, which has a much lower error rate. The GOP knows that recounting these areas will not result in a substantial change in vote for their candidate, and I believe that is why they chose to go their present route of challenging the legitimacy of the hand recount rather than endorsing a statewide recount earlier.

Your characterization of the Gore effort as "stealing" the election is inflammatory and irresponsible. The Bush campaign's efforts to malign the work of the hand counters greatly intensified since yesterday, not long after they were apparently surprised by the Florida Supreme Court decision. As I'm sure you know, hand recounts are the preferred way to settle close elections in Texas...George W. Bush signed that law in 1997.

If Bush trailed and demanded a hand count, I would fully support his request. The GOP claim (ad nauseam) that there has been all of the votes have been counted twice is disingenuous. They know that during a machine recount most of the same ballots mistakenly counted as "blank" will be missed again. The human eye can determine whether these ballots are actually blank or whether they have a fault which has caused the machine to ignore the vote in error.
