Qwest was sold a bill of goods by Nortel and installed SONET equipment when they thought they were getting state-of-the-art stuff a couple of years ago. Rumors of this have been circulating for a couple of years. It took a while for Qwest to wake up and smell the coffee.

This certainly sounds like rumor and speculation. When QWest made its decision, the decision was between OC-48 and OC-192. Roth prevailed on QWest to go with OC-192. QWest did get state of the art equipment. They were ahead of the pack in their decision to go with Nortel. Of course, they want an alternative vendor. The question is whether they can find one. Can Ciena ramp up its production enough to substantially reduce Nortel's market share. I doubt it. Remember when QWest turned to Lucent as an alternative vendor.
