TI, ADI get into low-power DSP match

News from E-InSite

Texas Instruments dropped the gloves first this week when they announced their new low-power DSPs,
the C5409A and the C5410A. By comparing power dissipation numbers with Analog Devices and
Motorola parts, Analog Devices actually responded by announcing its new series of low-power DSPs
exclusively to Electronic News.

TI drew first blood when it announced Wednesday that its C5409 draws just 57mW of power at 120MHz,
while its nearest competitor, ADI’s 2185M, draws 95mW at 75MIPS. ADI responded by saying TI should
compare the C5409A to the company’s new part, N series, which is also based on 0.18-micron process
technology and offers lower power dissipation.

ADI’s Mark Gill, product marketing manager for DSP, said the new 2185N is also designed for 1.8V
systems and will draw only 41mW at 75 MIPS, which is lower than the M series and the C5409A. Gill
also said that TI’s comparison is skewed because the performance numbers were based on 50 percent
utilization of its Multiply Accumulate unit, whereas ADI’s figures were based on 80 percent utilization of
the MAC.

Production quantities of the TI DSPs, the C5409A and the C5410A are scheduled for April 2001.
Production quantities of the 2185N are scheduled for February or March 2001, Gill said.
