Our newspapers have printed large(ish) ads sponsored by unions, including the Teachers' union.

I have difficulty answering your question, "Do unions announce support for candidates" because much union advertising seems to attack, rather than support, any particular side in the issues they are addressing.

The article for which you posted a link discusses the deterioration in the achievement of many of today's students. We are doing our children tremendous harm by not preparing them fully for the competition they will face throughout their lives. The effectiveness of our education system should be measured by the abilities of our students, and judging by their standing against students in many other parts of the world, our system is failing. I don't think the problem rests with the quality of our teachers, since I think we have some of the finest, but with the environment in which we expect them to perform. Like an army of good soldiers and nutty generals, they're losing the war through no fault of theirs.

I'd suggest an emphasis on learning the basics. Once mastered, careers and society can be built on such solid foundations. If the basics are not learned, everything else is simply a waste of resources. Unfortunately, the resource most wasted, and most precious, is our children.

It's time for a change.

Cheers, PW.
