I disagree.

There are people who will never do well, who will never succeed at controlling their impulses or marshalling their intellects enough to ever scrape together a decent life. In societies that have no safety nets, they starve, or live on garbage, or beg in the streets, or resort to the sort of criminality that makes it unsafe to venture outside of a police presence.

I am happy to pay taxes so that this society does not have too many people who are that desperate. I wouldn't mind paying a bit more- so that government could do an even better job. I am especially concerned about programs for the disadvantaged young. I see that as an investment. Although people can be greedy and stupid- and many are- that doesn't mean there are not solutions. To brutalize (socially, by failure and want) greedy and stupid people merely makes them dangerous and cruel and hopeless- I would prefer them fat and inactive to a more socially disruptive alternative. Bread and circuses work a lot better than freedom (not for all, but for many) imo.
