If Sprint uses CDMA one chips in phones for this holiday season buying, then Sprint will probably sell more CDMA 1x phones for the holidays of ’01. Some people will replace phones sooner to get the latest technology, and therefore Sprint stands to increase their yearly replacement rate%.

Given that phones are subsidized by carriers, how would a carrier benefit by encouraging a customer to get a new handset? I imagine that the second and subsequent phone isn't subsidized, only the one you buy when you sign up. But then you could buy your phone anywhere, not just from them. Do most upgraders get their new phones from their carriers?

I look at it a little differently. Imagine the joy in a customer's heart when a year from now their carrier finally implements that great new high speed data service they've been waiting for and they don't have to buy a new phone to make it work. Carriers complain about churn and then do things which cause it.
