Chaz,

<< in Asia the beginnings of 3G are on their way seems to be misunderstood. It is still amazing to see the number of stories that DoCoMo will be "first" with 3G next May while the path for KDDI for 1x and 1xEV is rarely mentioned >>

Reason for this is that Japan (like Korea) has spectrum set aside for 3G in the 2GHz band.

In Japan (not sure about Korea), just like Europe, there are also caps on data transmission speeds in existing spectrum. These could and may be waved for certain chunks of spectrum and even for certain technologies within that spectrum.

DoCoMo will be first in 3G spectrum but only with a small scale commercial trial.

Both KDDI and DoCoMo have scheduled full scale (albeit limited for DoCoMo) commercial launches late next fall. Difference being DoCoMo will be in 3G spectrum and KDDI's will not (and could be capped at 128 kbps. KDDI will not launch in 3G spectrum till late 2002 and will consequently not get as much attention.

DoCoMo (and possibly KDDI) may launch 3G type services in existing spectrum using PHS and PDC.
