Another interesting one on black holes is "The Life of the Cosmos" by Lee Smolin. This is a theory of cosmological natural selection, with universes being optimized for production of black holes. The theory is based on the hypothesis that rather than evaporating completely, black holes "bounce", but with a small random variation in parameters of the elementary particles and forces in the new universe, analagous to genetic mutation.
