Partisan emotion aside, the entire spectacle has been fascinating and impressive to witness.
Bland personally feels it is wrong to lay undue emphasis on how divided the country may appear to be as a result of this election. The true depth of this division is disportionately magnified by the freakish closeness of the election in a handful of key states. This bizarre outcome is in itself far more compelling and emotionally charged than either of the two candidates themselves. The process and how it has played out in this election transcends the players. Most observers intuitively realize this.
It is in fact the strength and underlying unity of our nation and its democratic process and purpose that is on display here for the rest of the world to witness. Let the shallow-minded criticize it all they like. In reality, it is working just as it was designed to work in the face of such a contingency and our whole society is waiting for the outcome in a remarkably patient, peaceful, orderly fashion. Why? Because we are all ultimately confident and proud of the underlying stability of the electoral process and the rule of law, however imperfect, that we have been so richly blessed to participate in as citizens of this country. We innately understand that even the ostensible losers in this process are winners, because they still retain their voice, their ability to participate, and their stake in the future direction of this country.
