That is really a touching story.

I go back and forth on the question of getting him the car. I think on the one hand it might send a bad message and create an expectation .... that giving is linked to receiving in an overt or direct way.

On the other hand, you want to reward the kid for being so good-hearted.

In the end, I would be inclined not to get him that car but to get him something else he really had his heart set on, but thought he would not get.
