"I want the fastest processor", says General Bullmoose, and what is good for General Bullmoose is good for intel, with apologies to Al Capp."
Fastest was relevent when PWeeiii and Athy went head to head as relative levels of performance were a direct function of MHz...With the P4, MHz as a relative performance indicator vis a vis the Athy, is of little consequence...As a consumer, I'd be more than a little miffed if my 1.4 MHz couldn't keep pace with a competitor's 1.2 Mhz, especially if I paid a premium on the assumption that it would...The consumer does not like being duped...Quality, quality, quality...If a 1.2 MHz Athy offers superior performancce to a 1.4 MHz P4, by inference, utilizing a MHz standard, the 1.4 MHz P4 is an inferior product...Very, very dangerous and perhaps lethal to its constituency, positioning here by INTC...Question begs if MHZ is the benchmark for comparison...How does a 1.5 gig Athy stack up against a 1.5 gig P4...We'll find out soon enough and I don't think today's P4 purchaser will be a happy camper when they arrive at the conclusion that at same MHz levels, the P4 is an inferior product!!! |
