Stocks of Personal Computer Makers Fall on Downgrades

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks of personal computer makers fell
on Monday after Wit Soundview cut its ratings on Dell Computer
Corp. (NasdaqNM:DELL - news), Gateway Inc. (NYSE:GTW -
news) and Apple Computer Inc. (NasdaqNM:AAPL - news) and
on chip maker Intel Corp. (NasdaqNM:INTC - news).

Analyst Mark Specker said the downgrades were based on weak
demand uncovered in calls to dozens of computer stores across
the country.

``Most of those who are closest to the consumer right now said
(PC sales) were running at least 10 percent below their
expectations,'' he said. ``That caused us to pull our ratings on
Dell and Apple.

``For Gateway, the demand climate around them is weak, but
then there are also some balance-sheet concerns.''

Specker said another reason for the Dell downgrade was to
make a distinction between Dell and Compaq Computer Corp.
(NYSE:CPQ - news). He said Wit Soundview's surveys had
found that Compaq was favored by customers in the market for
more powerful business computers, which PC makers are
expanding into as PC sales growth slows.
