My assertion was that the P4 has much, much more headroom THAN THE PIII. I am quite sure you would agree with me here ;). As for AMD's chances of keeping competitive in frequency, I didn't go into that. For the record, though, I think they have a very good chance. It really hinges on 3 elements:

- getting heat dissipation down with the mustang core
- SOI process... performance or bust?
- pipeline changes in the hammer core

From what I hear, #1 is good to go. I'm not a process expert, so I'll have to leave the SOI verdict to others. As for pipeline changes in the hammer core, AMD is redoing several things in the core anyway, so a complete redesign is necessary anyway.

<As far as on the current .18 process, I suspect that with the internal 3.0 GHz logic Intel are already sailing close to the wind.>

I think the main problem with scaling the P4 on .18 is heat.
