Too Little...Too Late..

The fastest processor focus is somewhat misleading. While sophisticates may determine that Athy currently offers the best price performance, 'General Bullmoose' types (the great unwashed) will undoubtedly see faster clock as faster performance regardless of the reality. So do either of these groups have much to do with either companies' success? Probably not.

The majority of CPU decisions are much more affected by real world considerations like availability, price, channel relationships, brand awareness, suitability to purpose, infrastructure support, CYA decisions by corporate buyers, mainstream reviews and other non speed dependent variables. While Intel can now boast the speed crown and will vociferously claim superiority, the much more complex battle seems to be obscured by the smoke of ongoing artillery fire. AMD's brand awareness is growing, it's product placement is improving, it's price/performance is more compelling and it will soon address its competitive vacuum in the server and laptop areas. While Intel may be Wellington and Blucher at Waterloo, the upstart AMD is acting with more alacrity and greater tactical execution than the shaken Napoleon. Intel has launched its latest salvo this morning. Only time will tell whether it is too little...too late.
