Well, part of the problem was concern about the potential for chicanery (it is easy to punch a chad while no one is looking), and the state of the ballots after two machine recounts, where mere rough handling might have dislodged chads. The Republican position was, then, that the requirement to recount had been satisfied, and we were beyond a point where hand recounts could be assumed superior. I think that is right.

As far as the court of public opinion goes, most people are willing to acknowledge the winner. That suffices.........
