"Lawyers at Today’s Hearing

Democrats: David Boies, a well-respected trial lawyer, won the government’s antitrust case against Microsoft earlier this year, and was awarded trial lawyer of the year in 1999.

Dexter Douglass, a Tallahassee lawyer with very strong ties to the Democratic Party, served as general counsel to then-Gov. Lawton Chiles and was one of the lead attorneys in Florida’s successful litigation against tobacco companies.

Republicans: Michael Carvin is a Washington appellate lawyer who served in the Civil Rights Division and the Office of Legal Counsel in the Reagan Justice Dept. Successfully argued against the U.S. Census’ use of statistical sampling in the 2000 Census.

Joseph Klock is a major Florida corporate lawyer who has successfully represented powerful sugar companies and health insurers. He voted for Gore/Lieberman and works for a traditionally Democratic firm.
