This seems like a very positive release. I think it is usually good when you can help establish the standards.
Wind River Elected to Java Community Process' Executive Committee Company to Help Steer Evolution of Java Technology for Embedded Community ALAMEDA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 20, 2000--Wind River Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: WIND - news), a leading provider of software and services for smart devices in the Internet age, today announced it has been elected to the Executive Committee (EC) of the Java(TM) Community Process (JCP) Program 2.0's Micro Edition (see separate ``New Executive Committee Members for Java Community Process Program 2.0 Are Instated'' press release today from the JCP Program Management Office). The Java Micro Edition EC, on which Wind River will serve a three-year term beginning December 12, 2000, oversees the Java technologies for the consumer/embedded market, with responsibility for the Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition technology specification.
As a member of the Executive Committee, Wind River will represent the interests of embedded developers using Java, including more than 250 customers who use Wind River Java implementations and members of Wind River's extensive partner network - more than 600 companies - who have compatible technologies. Other members of the Micro Edition EC include Wind River partners and customers such as Ericsson, Cisco and IBM, Motorola, Nokia, Philips, Siemens, and SONY.
``By securing a seat on the Executive Committee, Wind River gives a voice to the entire embedded community,'' said Curt Schacker, vice president of corporate marketing and development. ``Wind River's relationship with customers across the full range of embedded applications gives the company insight into the complex requirements for embedded Java specifications. Our election by the Java community affirms our mission to accelerate the development of Java-based smart, connected devices.''
Since the introduction of the Java platform in 1995, Wind River has led the efforts to adapt Java technology for use in embedded devices, and was the first company to offer a 100% compatible port of a Java Virtual Machine (JVM) to a real-time operating system (RTOS): VxWorks®. Today, Wind River's product is used in more projects than any other JVM offering (Venture Development Corp.).
Prior to the election to the permanent Micro Edition EC, Wind River was appointed by Sun Microsystems to the JCP interim Executive Committee. During that time, Wind River participated in several expert groups and was actively involved in the ``Blue Ribbon'' advisory group, which created JCP 2.0. Wind River also helped to highlight the need for a separate Micro Edition EC to facilitate Java's proliferation into smart connected devices.
