I have been following the discussion going on between DS and GM, And would like to weigh in. You both are doing a good job keeping us lurkers interested, keep it up! GS, you said "think pie chart" referring to competitors taking share from NTAP. Since storage is an (greatly) expanding market, the pie would have to be growing also. This is not a zero sum game (yet). The need for storage exceeds supply so early in the game there is a lot of low hanging fruit. Right now Dell wants To be a player in that market. Dell would need at least one high profile contract for credibility. The Navy deal signifies that player status, but not evidence of superior playing skills unless they took it from NTAP. To gauge how large that contract is, how many terabytes of storage is sold annually? <I would think the process of replacing NTAP as the leader in NAS area is well on its way> How do you come to that conclusion? How often do Dell and NTAP bid on the same contract, and what is the win rate, as well as the change in that win rate over time seems necessary... If you have that info, I would like to see it. Didn't the navy prefer battleships to aircraft carriers as the key to naval power well into WWII? (perhaps an example of a DI?) The right way, the wrong way, the army way has to have a navy variation, no? Any shellbacks Know it? Anything I think I know about the technology inside NTAP's boxes I ape from DS, so I'll leave that to him. |
