"Good grief, I couldn't even get 56K modem speed! The most I could get is about 46K modem speed."
46k modem connect, consider yourself lucky. I am out in the sticks with a bad phone line. Like any good shopper, I did some research before selecting a modem...
56k.com
The Diamond Supra Express 56k hardware modem is apparently THE modem to get. Alas, I still get a whopping 26.4k connect with it, each and every single time. Which is no faster than my previous modem (USR 28.8k). At least it's reliable, though.
As to Linux based internet solution... I don't have a slightest clue... If my trading softwares are compatible with Linux OS, I will have no problem migrating over to it. But unfortunately, not all my trading softwares work on Linux. So, no Linux for me. :-(
No what I was referring to is a totally separate computer that runs Linux, and is just used to share the internet connection and protect the internal network. It doesn't even have to be anything fancy, a 486 with 16MB RAM and a couple of network cards would work just fine. I have a similar setup except that it uses a single dial-up modem.
I am building yet another similar setup for a friend of mine who has cable access and is running an internet business. He may need DSL in addition to his cable setup, in case one of those services has an outage. And, fwiw, it's the same guy I helped out last weekend with a hard drive that was starting to fail. |
