The Treo is one of the first second-generation hard drive based players on the market. It is essentially the successor to the Personal Jukebox, also made by HanGo. This time, cosemtics were taken into account more than in the first generation product:
To start with, the Treo adds multi-codec support: It can play MP3, WMA, AAC, and ePAC with programmable firmware for future formats. Playlist management has also been added, allowing you to have many playlists on the unit. My favorite new feature is the 5 band equalizer with Jazz, Latin, Flat, Rock, and Dance settings with a custom setting. That should be better than even the nice equalizer found on the Nomad Jukebox! Curiously, the battery life slips down to 8 hours from the 10 or so hours found on the first PJB. Looking into it further, the Treo uses a 3.7V 1100 mAh battery, whereas the PJB uses a 3.6V 1350 mAh battery. The only thing it's missing is a backlit LCD. But with a product this great, its certainly something I would be willing to live without.
Conclusion:
With a smaller size than the PJB, all of these great new features, and a new lower price ($399), this is going to be THE hard drive based player to buy. It should be available in January of 2001, so save your pennies! |
