I'm not a competitive quake 3 player, so I really have no idea what they do. I would have thought the lack of detail in 640x480 would be a larger penalty then the lack of smoothness (since the refresh rate of the monitor will limit the fps displayed on the screen to a point where you could still run above 640x480 without effecting this)
