The problem is not so much the max or even average frame rate. It's the LOW frame rate. In a 4on4 Q3 match, the number of people shooting rockets etc. all over the place can cause quite a drop in framerate - esp. when playing in higher resolutions.

That said, some of these gamers are basically borderline insane. About a year ago, more than 50% of the players in the Danish Quake League (the game of choice being QuakeWorld at the time) played in SOFTWARE mode!! Their argument was that they didn't need the resolution as much as they needed the responsiveness that software rendering provides (this is actually true, but was not widely noted when 3D chips were originally introduced - 3D hardware rendering is associated with a very noticeable LATENCY or LAG).
