NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- Gemstar-TV Guide International and Barnes & Noble (B&N) have held preliminary
talks about combining their businesses, the Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday.
The two companies have held discussions over the past several weeks but a deal isn't imminent and remains a long
shot, the Journal reported in its online edition, citing people familiar with the situation.

Gemstar's (GMST: news, msgs) chief executive Henry Yuen is interested in gaining Barnes and Noble's (BKS:
news, msgs) leverage over publishers to ensure a steady supply of e-book material. Gemstar, a leading promoter of
electronic books, would be able to promote e-books through B&N's nationwide network of stores, the report
said.

One reason that B&N may be interested in doing a deal is because of the threat posed by publishers selling directly
to consumers through nonbook-selling Web sites, it said.

A business combination could also strengthen Gemstar's relationship with Barnes & Noble.com, a Web bookseller
that was one of the earlier supporters of e-books.

B&N already has a small stake of less than 1 percent in Gemstar.
