STAMFORD — U.S. homes with high-speed Internet access will quadruple by 2004 to more than 28 million subscribers, a survey by a Gartner Group Inc. unit shows.
There will be 6 million users by the end of this year, according to Dataquest Inc., a unit of the information technology research firm.

Cable modem subscribers are expected to increase to 14 million from 3.3 million in 2000. Products that allow users to install their own digital subscriber lines will increase users sevenfold to 9.8 million by 2004.

In order to compete in the growing high-speed access market, providers will have to offer multiple products that can run video and audio software applications, according to the study’s co- author Patti Reali, an analyst at Dataquest.
