Bush won the rural vote, basically the old South plus some midwestern states because the GOP's rhetoric works there. Gore won the populous areas because his rhetoric works there. Bush went to California in the waning weeks of his campaign and exclaimed "I will take this state". He proceeded to lose it by over 1 million votes. Bush could have spent the entire campaign in California and still would have lost there. Sophisticated city dwellers just don't buy into the GOP nonsense.
