The Harlem bit is besides the point. Yes. I meant "cuter" as in cute. The term "coloured people" is indeed much cuter than the terms "black people," and "African American people." It takes into account the broad range of coloration amongst the many people who consider themselves ethnic blacks. When we detach it from its racist history, it is a nice word, I think. There are white people and those that God, because of his Divine Love of Variety, have coloured-- Coloured People. Of course amongst whites there are considerable colour differences also.

I did read West's comment. It was not terribly sensitive, but I can't say it was racist. Perhaps West is an 80 year old southerner who, while never having disrespected blacks in general, have referred to them as "colored" all his life. The comment was made so quickly and without any apparent racial malice that I find it very hard to summarily dismiss it as racist. Again, I personally wouldn't use the word to refer to blacks, but I am a pretty sensitive kinda guy. In fact, I'm just downright cool.
