PAUL DEMONE RECANTS (slightly):

"I did think and predict the P4 would be faster out of the
chute on current mainstream applications.

I was wrong for two basic reasons:

1) The P4 relies on P4 specific code optimization much more
than I thought it would to achieve its full performance potential and these optimizations diverge from P6 optimal
code enough to make P4 performance quite erratic on a range
of common apps.

2) I thought Intel could have driven the software industry into more extensive optimization for the P4 in the time
before release. The fact that that directX games do so
poorly on P4 is staggering. Perhaps it is a small measure of
M$ payback for Intel's less than full support at their antitrust trial :)
Or perhaps it is an indication that AMD has established itself as a credible alternative that ISVs don't necessarily
feel obliged to snap to attention when Intel directs them like they did 15, 10, or even 5 years ago. Perhaps Intel is
simply too spread out with their simultaneous ARM, IA-64,
and networking product families to devote the resources to supporting x86 ISVs the way they did years ago.
