Pentium 4 Computers Debut In Japanese Market Wednesday, November 22, 2000 TOKYO (Nikkei)--Japanese computer manufacturers on Tuesday released models equipped with U.S. giant Intel Corp.'s latest microprocessor, the Pentium 4. The Pentium 4 is available in two speeds, 1.4GHz and 1.5GHz, both of which enable faster processing of video and music compression. NEC Corp. (6701) on Tuesday released three models: for corporate use, individual use and one sold exclusively online. The model targeting individual use is open-priced, but is likely to be found in stores for around 400,000 yen. Fujitsu Ltd. (6702) has debuted a workstation that is also equipped with the Intel Pentium 4 processor. Direct-sales manufacturers Dell Computer KK and Gateway Japan Inc. each released low-cost desktop models priced in the lower 200,000 yen range. They aim to attract individual users with the low price. Most computers equipped with the Pentium 4 tend to be slightly more expensive than other models. A salesperson at a volume sales store says, "Initially, most customers will be advanced users like Web content developers."
