Re: Florida law says that postmarks are required.

And normally many absentee ballots are rejected for no postmark, and it makes no difference.

This year, any ballot received within 3 days after the election was accepted. The number of rejected ballots from military installations due to no postmark is 8 in one county with a large military population and 9 in another, similar county - I don't recall the other numbers off hand. This is different from all previous years, when large numbers of ballots were thrown out for no postmark.

It's just not a real issue, and trying to make it into one is unfair. What I think is an issue is the selective nature of the recount, which is the result of Bush's strategy - he should have called for hand counts in districts that favored him, and it still isn't too late. Even though Gore won the national vote by about 250,000, I don't want to see him win by having the more accurate and more complete hand counts occur only in counties that favor him. The hand counting should be extended to the whole state - and it isn't too late to do so. The counties that favored Bush were smaller but more numerous and could be counted more quickly due to their much smaller size. But he has to get the process started.

Regards,

Dan
