P4 is screwed.

Finally got through to the tech docs at the Intel site. The P4 1.4 and 1.5 must be cooled to 70 and 72 C to stay within spec. Voltage is already at 1.7.

This is the limit of Intel's .18 process. When they tried to exceed it with the P3 1.13 (62 degrees and 1.75 volts), the chips became unstable.

Athlon at 1.5GHZ will wipe the floor with P4 at 1.5GHZ. The current (.18) Athlon wafer starts are targeting a reduced power consumption core that allows 1.5GHZ operation. I'm really stunned - from the evidence of the P4 spec sheets, it has little or no MHZ scaling advantage over Athlon. A Palamino cooled to P4 specs may well be good for 1.6 or 1.7GHZ, the same as P4.

No wonder why Paul has been frantic lately.
