New industrial uses for gold 2001
Catalytic Gold conference Cape Town, South Africa 2001
It is already proven that gold has significant abilities to catalyse the oxidation of diverse compounds at unprecedented low temperatures. For example, suitably prepared gold catalysts can remove carbon monoxide from gas streams at room temperature, even in the presence of humidity. Gold is also known to have the ability to catalyse the reduction of NOx in vehicle exhaust fumes. Gold's capability is of particular interest with regard to diesel-powered vehicles, especially in view of impending environmental legislation. Published work confirms the usefulness of gold catalysts in respect of selective oxidation, hydrogenation, hydrochlorination and oxidation-decomposition. However, the work in the field has been fragmented, and researchers have rarely had the opportunity to interact. This deficiency will be addressed by New Industrial Uses of Gold 2001 - Catalytic Gold, to be held in scenic Cape Town in April 2001.
An exciting range of sessions is planned, encompassing carbon monoxide oxidation, environmental applications, automobile exhaust purification, the chemical industry, and electrocatalysts for fuel cells. Each session will begin with an invited, senior keynote speaker who will address scientific issues, followed by several technical presentations, and will conclude with an industry-led discussion forum on the challenges, opportunities and issues identified. An evening workshop on the mechanisms of catalysis in gold systems is sure to generate animated debate. There will be time on the conference programme for networking with colleagues from every continent. There is also an option of a post-conference technical visit to Sasol, world leaders in synthetic fuel manufacture.
