calypso,

<< My big question is, when I get my smart card Visa, will it work with the AmEx reader? >>

It certainly should. The reader should be fully PC/SC compliant:

pcscworkgroup.com

If not, drivers get updated, and are downloadable.

Visa gets a bit confusing because it depends on whether you are talking about Visa Smart Debit Credit (VSDC) or Visa Open Platform (VOP). I think providians initial card will be VSDC. Fleet's may be VOP. I've been a little out of touch with the arena since July.

Still the reader should work with all of the above.

PC/SC should make all cards and allo readers compatible.

A great potential enabler of smart card usage and PKI.
