| The US State Department was not at its best during the war, and it is a shame that Roosevelt was swayed....Anyway, it is not quite true that liberals all looked favorably on Hitler, but some of them didn't look so unfavorably at him, and entertained similar ideas. It is important to be fair though. There were supporters and critics of eugenic ideas on both sides. If Chesterton is a hero of conservatives and Mencken of libertarians, Lippman is a (moderate) liberal hero, for example.......As for the irrational fear of the Religious Right, I agree, it has become a big inhibitor of productive thought on the Left! By the way, religious belief was the biggest common thread among Righteous Gentiles, those who shielded Jews at personal risk during the Holocaust. Of course, there were those with no especial piety, but strong belief in God was prevalent among the majority, both Protestant and Catholic. The Resistance in Germany was also dominated by those with strong personal piety......... |
