A stent is a small stainless steel coil. A catheter (a small plastic hollow tube) is inserted through a small incision in the femoral artery in the groin, snaked into the aorta, and then into the blocked coronary artery. A small ballon is pushed through the catheter and inflated inside the artery and compresses the plaque which is blocking the artery. This re-opens the artery. However, the plaque will commonly re-expand following the procedure, partly blocking the artery again. The stent is put in place to prevent this. It is also inserted through the catheter.
