Business Editors and High Tech Writers SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 21, 2000--As part of its ongoing efforts to expand Ricochet coverage, Metricom (Nasdaq: MCOM) brought online five additional key Wired Access Points (WAPs) in the following areas: New York City, Suffolk County (Long Island), NY, and Westchester County, NY. Major locations now receiving Ricochet coverage include: -- Bronx, Botanical Gardens (oh great, I can sit outside and chew on mint leaves while I check email at 140kbs! You do know that there are 25 different types of mint leaves in the Herb garden section of the park including one mint that ha a chocolate taste (mmm, mystic mints) don't you.? -- Manhattan, Upper East Side/Museum Row (Oh great, I can sit at JG Mellon and cruise Ebay while I am having a burger!) -- Queens, Astoria (Oh goody I can read YHOO while having bachlava) The West Babylon and White Plains WAPs represent Metricom's first network penetration in the Suffolk County and Westchester County areas, with service soon to come. To date, the Ricochet 128 kbps network now covers a population totaling more than seven million in the New York-New Jersey metropolitan area. The Ricochet network consists of radio transceivers (Microcell Radios) mounted to streetlights or utility poles, and Wired Access Points (WAPs), which collect and convert the radio frequency (RF) packets for transmission to the wired Internet Protocol (IP) network backbone. The small radio transceivers are integral to the Ricochet network, allowing users to send and receive data from Ricochet wireless modems anywhere in a coverage area. I mean whatdaf*ckind of a PR is this? This company is flying off a cliff leaving no skid marks and they are worrying about getting friken Botanical Gardens reception up and running! How ludicrous. And what is it with those billboard adverts all over town with that old dude who looks like Richardo Montoban running from a prop plane to hop into a Cobra with some hot babe at the wheel? Is he going to read his email while she roars him back to his penthouse suite? Can't he use his Palm or Blackberry for that? Or does he think he can compose a video en route and fire it off to London?
The real subliminal message is that the dude ain't getting off the Concorde, more like an old P-51 and he's getting into a 35 year old car that goes like a bat out of hell but can't corner for it's life. But both pieces of machinery are old and there is better stuff out there that has more usefulness and is waay cheaper and easier to use.
For you engineers out there, all that horsepower might be great, but is sure is a slim slice of the market. So with all of the dot.coms outta cash (ScooterBoy is BROKE) and investment bankers about be laid off like lemmings (what do you call an investment banker? Hey Waiter!), WHO THE EFF is gonna sue this service in any kind of quantity near the 14% coverage(that's 14 Million portables!) level that MCOM needs to break even on just an operating cash flow basis? This thing is T.O.A.S.T! |
