The word in question (I am not recalling it) can bear the meaning "virgin", but need not. In a modern text, the question would be left in the air: the less specific meaning would be used in the text, with a footnote on the alternatives and the controversy. Of course, in the actual canon, the "virgin" may be imputed by the overall context (i.e., in the Jerusalem Bible, it would be assumed to be a Marian reference).....
