Here's a belated post of a week-old article at the GLOBES Arena site: new.globes.co.il
Thurs: Comverse the winner – and a few losers
Shlomo Greenberg 16.11.2000 17:33 The Israeli shares traded yesterday on a mixed trend. Among the Israeli nifties, Comverse (CMVT) stood out with a 5.6% rise to $115.1, reflecting a company value of $20 billion. The positive sentiment surrounding the company’s shares has actually been continuing for three months. After a 45% surge during this period, the share price is only 6% off its March peak.
The Comverse surge can, of course, be attributed to the company’s excellent financial reports, which regularly exceed the analysts’ forecasts every quarter. Nevertheless, it appears to us that the true reason for the rise is the dissipating of investors’ fears of competition from Phone.com, which recently merged with Software.com. Comverse aspires to be a gorilla in messaging services for cellular Internet also. Analysts now believe that Comverse can do it.
In any case, the special report published by the Goldman Sachs investment house on future fields and shares mentions Comverse as one of the 27 up and coming companies. By the way, other Israeli companies appear on this list, like Check Point (CHKP), Mercury Interactive (MERQ), and Amdocs (DOX).
