Nortel is set to introduce its all-optical switch, in January. To my mind this is a classic march of disruption. The optical media are becoming more and more capable. At some point they will cross over the capabilities of the electronic routers and displace them. This will happen first at the core (watch out, Juniper), and then move outward. The Nortel product is just one step in this progress.
