Goutama, Re: Intel Capital Portfolio Revisions

I made the adjustments to add NUFO and adjust holdings of CMGI. siliconinvestor.com

I am also pleased to report that I am now using a new computer with a Duron 600, 256MB, Win2K, 30 GB, Asus A7V. Went for cheapest processor since I would like to upgrade to a Palomino next year. The timing for this purchase was not planned - but when the old machine went AWOL (should be recoverable for a backup) it was simply time. I was definitely tempted to get a TBird 1 GHz but decided that this would seem like more than enough for now. Actually I priced for a T-Bird 900 then decided on a Duron and the 600 was the only speed immediately available - leftovers and he was surprised I said this would be ok. Moving up from a 233MMX anything was likely to be nice.

I bought from a local SD shop and appreciated their input in the process and setup - particularly being new to Win2K. The store owner and I also talked about Intel-AMD (with my professed favor towards AMD and AMD investment and his favor for Intel and INTC investment). He indicated that technically they were both fine but from his business perspective AMD was lacking in three areas:

(1) Retail shops don't get to return defective product (unless it is grossly defective such as missing pins) for refund so eat the loss.

(2) Lower quality control on AMD processors shown by much higher DOA than Intel (he sells mostly Intel).

(3) Lack of direct technical support to SD. He must seek assistance through two layers of distributers which makes timely support much more difficult.

I would appreciate any comments on similar experiences from others as I believe these are areas that AMD could and must address as it seeks to expand its market share. I already plan to try and follow-up on these issues directly with AMD after I have gathered some confirmation of these issues.

However, he supported my decision and after building the system remarked that he was quite surprised by the performance demonstrated by the system. He was also building a Celeron 600 system today and it took 2-3 times as long to load the operating system. The high-quality support for this sytem (high quality and ample RAM and HD) likely reduced the shortcomings of a slower processor compared to typical low-end systems.

Now I just need to locate and reinstall a dozen applications and then try to resurrect the old machine - with a new floppy drive which also chose this time to fail completely.

I appreciate the suggestions and comments offered by many here with respect to my consideration of a new machine. In particular, I believe the recommedations to use a local SD shop will be very beneficial from a support and service point of view. After some challenges in establishing the cable modem service we had to reinstall the OS and the owner stayed late so this could be completed.
