Is Datek web based or direct access?

Daytek is web-based, it's not bad but nothing compared to a direct access broker.

Does it charge extra commission for shorting stocks?

No it doesn't.

I don't know how low their commission will be in Canada. Daytek uses Island, which they own, to send orders to Nasdaq and we all know that there is no ECN on Canadian exchanges. My guess is the rate will be cheaper than usual for trading Canadian equities but not that much. I personally don't believe it will be 9.99 like in the US.
