High on the "success" of the AMD 486 chip (and on the promise of the upcoming K5*), Compaq proudly printed on the cover page of one of their annual reports (can't remember which year exactly), something to the effect of:
"With Compaq outside- it dosen't matter what's inside".

This was a direct affront to the "Intel Inside" campaign and I don't think that the Cyrix chip(s) were anywhere in the picture (particularly the Media Gx) at that time.

Did you work for Cryix at any time? Reading your comments about the company, it seems that they could have done no wrong.

* Of course we all know how that finally played out. Unfortunately this should be a lesson to all here that can't seem to praise Jerry enough. They forget that this man has been running the show for over 30 years now.

Admittedly, he kept AMD in the game. But I really think that Atiq and gang had a tremendous amount behind the "technical" turnaround at AMD.

I've heard (read) you diss Atiq, and claim his departure as the best thing that happened to AMD. Maybe his business acumen (or more his desire to butt heads against Intel) was not quite as strong as Jerry's, but I think that Atiq (and gang) brought a disclipine and "technical" awarness that Jerry was not able to bring to AMD for more than 2 decades.

Additionally there is direct (thought unfortunately not visible in public) evidence that the techinical "environment" at AMD has already suffered after his departure. There is still a world of a difference between the techinical support (models, guidelines etc.) between Intel and AMD. I think some of it is indirectly apparent in things like slow DDR and Duron roll out and the incredibly slow 2P roll out etc.

I think that everyone here will agree that the Athlon roll out was the best thing that AMD has ever pull off. Does it not surprise you that the foundation for the chip and its roll out happened during Atiq's tenure?

From all indications new roll outs after that (thunderbird, Duron, 2P, DDR), though building on a strong foundation (of the K7) are taking place with slipping schedules.

I'll be a happier shareholder the day Jerry passes on the mantle.
