Before I wrote that post, I shut my system down and booted from the floppy I later described. It booted into DOS with my CD drive working OK, just as expected. I inserted my Win98 CD, the one supplied with my system, and typed SETUP at the command prompt. Again, as expected, SETUP began execution, starting with a hardware verification. Since I had no desire to continue, I aborted the operation. After removing the floppy and CD, my system booted to Win98 as normal. I then composed and posted the details.

Honestly, I have no idea about a system not responding to these instructions. I've always assumed that upgrades work in a manner similar to original software except for requiring some verification that the installation is truly an upgrade, usually through a request for a peek at the original CD.

I'm assuming that his PC has loaded the memory managing software as indicated in my post. It wouldn't surprise me if it's required.

Cheers, PW.

P.S. Interestingly, Win98 SETUP actually uses Win3.1 code.

P.P.S.
