Gore’s court room victory staggers Asians

I’m stunned at Florida’s supreme court decision. I shouldn’t be. Gerry Jackson assured me by e-mail that the court had already found for Gore and that the whole legal procedure was nothing but an elaborate charade to legitimise its actions. Once the decision was made public a lengthy justification would be produced defending what amounted to a judicial lynching of the Bush camp and a gross violation of the Constitution.

In his view, one I felt free to challenge at the time, ideological corruption had reached so deeply into the American judiciary that one will never lose money in the long run by betting on political decisions that Democratic judges like to pretend are based on law.

In his opinion only elections curb the ideological zeal of Democratic judges. Where the judges have been appointed by Democrats the law will merely become a means of advancing the left’s ideological agenda. I think it was having a British education that deceived me into disputing Gerry’s glum a view of the American judiciary. I shall think thrice in the future before I challenge him again on such matters. But I did ask him how did he know what these judges would do? He simply said “they’re lefties and lefties never change.” I should have known given my own experience of Chinese communists. But I judged America by a higher standard. That standard is now falling.

What does the court’s outrageous decision mean for Asia, at least in the short run? Let me start with the title of this article. Although the decision was announced only a few hours ago it has not been difficult to gauge the general reaction. As I said in my previous article, every Asian I met believes Bush is the rightful president because he won by the rules. I also said that America is highly regarded as the home of liberty. The court’s decision, which was obviously motivated by ideology, will lead many to conclude that it is a symptom of a terminal decline in American power; that being rich and comfortable has left Americans oblivious to external dangers and highly vulnerable to internal challenges to the rule of law and its Constitution.

Should Gore manage to capture the White House he will not be seen in Asia as the legitimate president, in spite of the diplomatic niceties that will be extended to him. He will always be the crook who cheated his way into Oval Office. He will not be trusted and his intentions and motives will be treated with the gravest suspicions. His trade policy has already alarmed a number of governments who believe that it will only add to the region’s economic woes, which is true.

Surprising as you might think, his book Earth in the Balance has been studied. To put it mildly, those Chinese technologists and scientists who have read it think of Gore, among other things, as a complete sa gua. Roughly translated it means idiot. I have never heard of any Western leader being described in such scathing terms by Asian scientists.

Asia could be heading for a difficult period. The economic climate is getting gloomier and the political situation is becoming uncertain. In these trying times America needs a leader who at least possesses legitimacy if nothing else. Instead Americans are in grave danger of humiliating themselves by sending us a zheng zhi hai bong. Political gangster to you. Somehow I don’t thing this is what Lincoln had in mind when said he wanted “America to an example to the World”.

Right now I can only pray for divine intervention. I cannot believe that a divine being would allow a country that has done so much good to be destroyed, even by its own judges.
