I think people are just wired differently. Zealots and partisans have their uses. Folks who think for themselves make lousy soldiers and office drones (just two examples of many).

So humans as a race probably need free thinking cynics AND group thinkers- but I don't think there is any way to make the two extremes mix freely. Then there is the large body of humanity in the middle, who don't care very much and who don't find the parade of humanity amusing. The silent, unmoved majority. The rock upon which society is built.
