They are downplaying these [KDDI's coming 3G] services in advance

Ever the optimist I, could Enoki be laying the groundwork for a 1X overlay by DoCoMo?

Two things I remember from an analyst conference call with head of Lucent's Wireless Group last May. One is that the problem wCDMA was having (in arriving at a standard) was on the data end. Enoki's comments confirm that. (Also, Lucent said that DoCoMo would be using the 1999 standard to get out of the box first with wCDMA.)

The second was that Lucent was building their base stations to allow maximum flexibility about the air interface (hope I have this correct) chosen. Why couldn't the equipment NEC is supplying to NTT for wCDMA rollout have similar flexibility. What's to stop DoCoMo switching at the last minute?

All pure speculation; but worth considering?
