One is that the problem wCDMA was having (in arriving at a standard) was on the data end.

You have a very good memory. Data throughput was the problem mentioned by LU and data throughput is what Docomo seems to be complaining about now. 1xEV running on at least some of the channels would change Docomo's mind on the potential of 3G. I don't remember how many MHZ Docomo received for 3G, but they probably have enough for at least a few Wideband channels. Even if they were too stubborn to abandon WCDMA, they could certainly deploy 1xEV in a few adjacent channels.

Like I said before, the more I hear from Q's competition, the more I like Q.
