Nixon only resigned when he saw that impeachment was a surety

Nixon 'resigned' because that was the only way to
keep his US Government pension .. If he were impeached
he would have lost that safety net .. His resignation
was motivated purely by self-interest .. not by any
desire to 'spare the country' from the turmoil of
an impeachment proceeding ..
