@home is a network run in the USA that has a high speed very fast, very clean backbone with very little traffic on it. Each of these sites have massive arrays of Caching servers that enhance the speed and reduce overall network traffic and keep it in the local loop which is the equivalent of practical ethernet speeds which is about 5 to 6 MEGABYTES/sec. I know this because I have it and we have been running this service here in Canada for about 8 months officially and for two years on pilot projects. WE in Canada have an agreement in principle that we are to provide the backbone in Canada for the @home network and we will link up with them in a few months.
The people behind the scenes at the @home are immensely qualified engineers and PHd's that are experts in their respective fields. The quality control is very high and not just any old computer dog can get on. It has certain minimum requirements that many computers meet and more meet every day, so the traffic is bound to kept to lightning speeds by not allowing the 14400stylemodems to flood the IP traffic lanes with useless ACK's. I generally can download at the 3-5 megaBYTE range and have even downloaded a copy of internet explorer from Microsoft.com in 19 seconds- a 11.1 megaBYTE file. This is thefuture of the internet.Those of you with a fast enough connection try our server at tucows.shaw.wave.ca .
