Merger talks underway?

BN confirms talks with GMST, does not rule out a merger. This is different from their reply earlier in the week.

My sense is Murdoch has told Henry he wants to merge GMST into a new company composed of Liberty and certain of News Corp's satellite properties. Henry is now exploring other options. If Murdoch decides he wants to convert the e-book model to open proprietary architecture, several publishers will invest cash immediately, which reduces GMST's debt position, making it a stronger partner in Murdoch's deals.

Murdoch's major objective is to gain control of Hughes Satellite from GM. By converting GMST's e-book side to a royalty game, he creates a steady flow of revenue to strengthen GMST as a bidder with NEWS and Liberty for Hughes.

The next piece of the puzzle is Thompson / RCA. If it joins the Murdoch bid team, that's another strong hand, and one less ally for Henry. (Question - was Murdoch including Thompson's 10% of GMST in the 46% he claimed to control?)
